La mer et l’amour. Ocean and Love. Two topics which are intricately linked in my heart.
I’ve always loved the ocean. Born in La Rochelle, on the Atlantic Coast, I feel most alive near the sea, a lake, a mountain stream or a river. Waves, ebb and flow, the gushing sound of water, ripples on a lake, these are images and sounds which I simply love, lean into and merge with. One with nature.
This painting was the first one where the waves of the ocean came crashing on the canvas, pure energy, washing the earlier layers which were my first attempts at expressing love with paint… not convincingly.
The theme of the ocean comes time and time again, through the various stages of my paintings, in early layers or in final layers and I find that this theme comes through best when rendered with my bare hands and fingers, covered in paint, directly from a bottle of fluid paint or squeezing a tube of heavy body paint.
And that red wave symbolises pure love. Hence the title of the painting, which translates in English as “the wave of love”.
