#34 – Maha Kali Maha Shakti
January 2016
Acrylic on canvas (1m x 1m)

I started this painting while listening to a recording of an online course by Lisa Schrader, my mentor of the course “Awakening Shakti”. Lisa had a beautiful New Year meditation which I listened to in the background as I was painting and setting intentions for the coming year.

I remember Lisa mentioning champagne bubbles in the meditation. The round shapes on the painting are for me like these champagne bubbles, letting go of the past and bringing new sparkles of energy to the foreground, some were very light in colour, others very dark, like two sides of a coin. Letting go and renewal.

I felt very much at peace when painting this first layer, healing deep feminine wounds, getting in touch with the great, nurturing and inspiring Maha Shakti. An ocean and immensity of blue sky merging in a dream-like universe. I mostly painted this with my hands, a mix of the dark Prussian blue, the deep bleu outremer, lighter pale blue and white, clouds or bubbles underneath some of the blue waves.

I let the painting rest for a few days. It felt peaceful.

And somehow, it felt incomplete and boring when I picked it up next. As I felt a righteous anger rising up from the darkest corner of my soul, I grabbed that bottle of cadmium red paint that I love so much. And with it in my hand, I slayed with that sword of red paint the demons of the past, creating on the painting a very vivid vibe. I felt carried by Maha Kali, the Dark Hindu Goddess which is feared by many, but who carries with her a wind of change as she helps to remove the old obstacles to make room for the new. What more fitting as a New Year’s painting?!

This very healing painting to me has been looking over me, behind my desk, in my office, giving me the powerful and calming energy of both Goddesses to deal with work challenges. Very empowering.
